Vitaly Mizin is one of the Ukrainian soldiers wounded in the war who gets help from the Future for Ukraine Foundation. He was seriously injured when a rocket hit a military unit. Yulia Mizina, the wife, told us how it happened and how their family continues to live despite all the difficulties.
Before the war, Vitaliy lived in Cherkasy with a pregnant Yulia and their son. The man was doing furniture but was a military man in reserve. In March, Vitaly became a father for the second time, and already in April, he was called up.
In May, Mizin trained soldiers at the training center. They were ready to leave for the point when an enemy rocket flew into their part at night on May 17. Vitaliy woke up from the fact that something was falling on him. And in a second everything collapsed. The rocket hit exactly their part of the building, and a fire started. Only Vitaliy and two of his comrades survived.
Only after 5 hours, Mizin was taken out from under the rubble. He only could spell his wife's phone number and lost consciousness. "There, under the rubble, he already said goodbye to his life, asked for my forgiveness, and prayed to God that it would end soon. And it seems to me that he asked for this so sincerely that God saved him," says Yulia.
Vitaliy was given first aid at the Desna hospital and then taken to Kyiv. In two days, Yulia with her one-month-old baby and her eldest son moved to the capital to be close to him.
"Every day we went to see him in the hospital, doctors didn't let us in. We just walked under the windows, thinking where he might be lying," remembers Yulia.
Doctors could not promise anything for four months. Vitaly lost his right arm and leg and suffered burns to 60% of his body, including the right side of his head, which was burned to the skull.
Only now did Vitaly begin to recover and went outside for the first time. "This is a day to remember! Just a week ago, we started going out to the balcony. He is trying to climb onto the wheelchair by himself, — says Yulia about the treatment. — He is learning to use one hand and one leg. But they also suffered because the left shoulder was completely crushed."
Currently, doctors are performing final operations on Vitaliy's skin, and later — an operation on his left shoulder, which was not healed properly.
Despite the disappointing forecasts of doctors, Yulia and her husband fought for his life every moment.
"We plan to get dad back on his feet. During these months, the doctors taught me to live only one day at a time, — says Yulia. — Every day we get up with the positive attitude that we can do everything, and make prostheses as well. But the skin must heal completely, it may take a year. We just need to remake Vitalik."
"I need to support him so much that he becomes even stronger than he was. So that I would stand up next to him again and help him in everything," Yulia believes.
Together with the Ministry of Health, the Future for Ukraine Foundation sent the Mizin family to a hospital in Helsinki. We covered the family's transportation costs.
We sincerely wish Vitaliy to recover and his family a happy life, no matter what.
Glory to the heroes!
