Fishing for Ukrainian veterans at SEVEN LAKES: how it was

The proper integration of veterans into society is not only about receiving medical care and rehabilitation, but also about their returning to favorite activities and hobbies that help them feel that life goes on and that they can be active and fulfilling despite their injuries.

Providing support and expressing genuine emotions was the goal of a joint fishing trip for Ukrainian defenders, organized by the FFU, @uplus.system, and @iryska_charitable_foundation foundations together with @mcop_ukraine.

“There was a very positive and comfortable atmosphere, despite the rain in the first half of the day. I enjoyed not so much the fishing, but the lively conversation and being outdoors. I also met a friend with whom I studied at college in my hometown — it was a very unexpected and pleasant meeting. I would like to thank the organizers for hosting such events, where you can feel like a human, comfortable with nature. Special thanks to the chefs for a great lunch, it was incredibly delicious!” shared veteran Oleksandr Galitsyn.

“You look at the water, and you feel calm, your mind finally settles down and your thoughts go quiet. At first, he didn’t want to go (about Oleksandr), but he caught more than anyone else; he caught and released seven sturgeons,” said Ukrainian defender Serhii Tovtin.

It was a warm meeting among comrades and volunteers, enhanced by new experiences, communion with nature while fishing (catch-and-release), and quality rest.

“Our defenders mostly stay in hospitals, especially after being wounded — it’s hard for them to switch focus. For example, Oleksandr went fishing for the first time since being wounded. He admits that he finally relaxed. He enjoyed it, meeting other men with similar injuries. Our Artem was with a friend and met other men, and they shared fishing tips. Even just sitting and looking at the water, they all relaxed and felt calm,” comments Veronika Kravchenko, physical therapist at MCOP Ukraine.

Special thanks to @sevenlakes.ua for providing the location, a truly warm welcome, and the best treats for Ukrainian heroes.
