Valentina Dengina, a 20-year-old nurse, comes from the small village of Dobrotvir in the Lviv region. Her father is military, so Valya always knew she wanted to study medicine and serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Valya studied medicine in Lviv for four years. Just a month after graduation signed a contract with the Armed Forces. In April 2020, Valentina went to the Joint Forces Operation zone for the first time and stayed there for almost nine months.
On the first day of the full-scale war, February 24, Valya was in a military unit in the Dnipro. After that, it relocated to the Zaporizhia region.
Valya and her boyfriend Dmytro were riding in a tank when an enemy shell hit them. The girl received multiple injuries after being damaged by the blast, among them extensive contusion followed by a coma for ten days, the lungs and internal organs contusion, and an arm fracture in two places.
Kyiv Hospital is not the first place where Valya gets treatment. She has already been treated in Zaporizhia, Dnipro, and Vinnytsia and is now getting rid of complications from tracheostomy at the capital's hospital.
Her boyfriend Dima was also injured. After treatment in the hospital, he went to Valya in Vinnytsia and made her a proposal. Valya's biggest dream after the war is to get married.
Valentina is undergoing rehabilitation now. An operation was conducted on the left humerus, installing osteosynthesis plates of the fracture. She is currently waiting for the surgery to install a plate at the site of the lost skull bone. The Future for Ukraine Foundation helped Valya with the costs of these operations.
