Choreographer Oleksandr Chayka's leg was amputated

Choreographer Oleksandr Chayka's leg was amputated

08.07.2022

The Future for Ukraine Charity Foundation purchased and delivered an anti-bedsore pillow for Oleksandr Chayka, the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade combatant, who is now in the Vinnytsia City Emergency Clinical Hospital.

Oleksandr was 32 years old when the full-scale russian-Ukrainian war began. He taught children acrobatics and dancing, and after February 24, he took up arms and went to the city of Popasna in the Luhansk region, where fierce battles with the enemy were taking place.

There he held positions on the frontline with his comrades. One day during a fierce fight, Oleksandr hitting by a tank shell. The shell fragments stuck in his legs and buttocks, and the warrior was covered with earth and knocked down with iron beams. For almost an hour, the comrades dug out Oleksandr and helped him get to the nearest hospital.

Doctors gave little chance for life. Diagnosis is mine-explosive injury, gunshot fracture of the right femur with displacement, and anaerobic gas gangrene of the right lower limb. Oleksandr lost lots of blood, and severe injuries led to gangrene development resulting in the amputation of his right leg.

Chayka underwent two operations, two weeks on a ventilator, and kidney dialysis. Now he is tormented by phantom pains, but the guy does not give up and believes that he will soon recover and be able to do sports again. For this, he needs a 3D stump augmentation and treatment in the USA — the production of a modern functional prosthesis. The Future for Ukraine Charity Foundation will support Oleksandr during his treatment until he fully recovers.

"Sasha started to sit in the wheelchair, but it's very uncomfortable for him, as the amputation is high. He needed a special Roho pillow filled with air for supporting the amputated leg while sitting. — says Oleksandr's bride. — This pillow is very expensive, so we are very grateful to the Future of Ukraine Foundation for supporting us, helping us buy the pillow and personally bringing it. When Sasha sat in the wheelchair with this pillow, and had a completely different feeling. Comfortable, with no pressure, the wound feels less painful, and he can ride on the street for longer."
