Exchange of experience with the American clinic MCOP in the field of rehabilitation. Lecture by a rehabilitologist from the USA, Farhad Ostovari

04.09.2023

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the number of people, including military personnel, who need rehabilitation after injuries, surgery, prosthetics, etc., has dramatically increased. And this is definitely a new experience for the Ukrainian specialists in the physical therapy and rehabilitation fields. That's why we invited Dr. Ostovari, who has a 14-years experience working with military amputees from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Knowledge of this level is crucial for Ukrainian doctors.

Dr. Ostovari is the clinical director of the care program for patients with amputations and after prosthetics at the Medical Center Orthotics and Prosthetics (MCOP), where our defenders undergo prosthetics and rehabilitation within the framework of the project "Prosthetics of the Ukrainian military 2023", launched by the Foundation with the support of regular donor Vadym Stolar.

"Today, another contribution was made to the rehabilitation industry development in Ukraine. We are grateful for that to our friends from MCOP clinic, who have been helping our defenders get prostheses for more than a year and return them to an active life! In particular, I am grateful to Dr. Ostovari for the visit and the invaluable experience he shared with us.

Many thanks to the doctors of the Head medical center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, to the specialists of the Central Clinical Hospital, the Main Military Clinical Hospital, and other medical facilities of the country, who save the lives of our defenders! And we put all our efforts to support them in this way!" Vadym Stolar posted on his Facebook.

The event was attended by specialists of the Territorial medical association Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the Head medical center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the Main Military Medical Center of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, the Massage and volunteer rehabilitation center for the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the Peremoha Sanatorium.

Dr. Ostovari spoke about the phenomenon of hemiparesis, a partial paralysis due to damage of the brain or spinal cord, which often occurs in military personnel after severe injuries. By providing an example of his successful cases, the doctor shared the scheme of treatment and rehabilitation according to the protocol in U.S. clinics.

The lecture was enriched with practical information, without any pre-ceremonies, so everyone could get the maximum knowledge from it. However, the event ended on an emotional note with warm words of support from Dr. Ostovari, who said,

"For me, coming to Ukraine is very symbolic because the statehood of the United States of America is based on the values of freedom and democracy. I admire the struggle of the Ukrainian people for their independence and can’t stand aside! My experience, which I shared today with Ukrainian doctors, is a small but important contribution to helping Ukraine in these difficult times."

We sincerely hope that the information at the event was useful for guests and will help to improve the level of medical care in our country, and hence, help to provide the necessary medical care to even more Ukrainians!
